Henin wins again in Madrid; injured Serena quits

11/07/2007 - Madrid, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - World No. 1 star Justine Henin won her second round-robin match in two days, while Australian Open champion Serena Williams retired from her opening bout Wednesday at the $3 million Sony Ericsson Championships. This exclusive eight-player event marks the final tournament of the 2007 WTA Tour season.

The top-seeded Henin blew past sluggish third-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 6-2 on Day 2 at Recinto Ferial Casa de Campo. Henin cruised in 1 hour, 28 minutes with the help of six service breaks. The diminutive Belgian won 19 more points (71-52) than Jankovic, who is now a dismal 0-9 lifetime against the gritty Belgian, with a whopping seven of those setbacks coming this year.

The reigning Championships titlist Henin beat France's Amelie Mauresmo in last year's lucrative finale here in Madrid.

The high-flying Henin has already clinched the year-end top-ranking for a second straight season and for the third time in five years. The seven-time major titlist captured this year's U.S. and French Open titles and is currently riding a scorching 22-match overall winning streak.

Henin is scheduled to meet Williams here on Thursday, but the American's status for the match could be in doubt. If Williams should pull out of her scheduled bout against Henin, first alternate Marion Bartoli of France would take the American's place and assume her 0-1 record here. The 10th-ranked Bartoli shocked Henin in the Wimbledon semifinals back in July.

The high-flying Henin (2-0) headlines this week's four-player Yellow Group, which also features Jankovic (0-1), a fifth-seeded Williams and seventh- seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze (1-1). Jankovic and Chakvetadze are making their Championships debuts here.

The 2001 Championships winner Williams dropped the first set, 6-4, against Chakvetadze on Wednesday and then retired from the bout due to a knee injury. Williams required treatment from a trainer on her left knee while trailing 4-5, and then retired against Chakvetadze after playing only one more game.

The oft-injured Williams' big sister Venus had already pulled out of this event due to some ongoing dizziness problems.

In addition to her one title at this event, Serena is also a two-time runner- up at the prestigious tournament.

This week's other four-woman group, the Red Group, features second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova (0-1), fourth-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic (1-0), sixth-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova (1-0) and eighth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova (0-1). Sharapova captured this title in Los Angeles in 2004.

The top-two players from each group will move into the semifinals here on Saturday, while the final will be staged Sunday. Round-robin action is the order of the day through Friday.

The 2007 Championships titlist will collect $1 million, while the runner-up will settle for $500,000.
